Radiation Detox
Reducing one’s toxic load is at the top of the priority list for most of us. In a previous blog, I talked about Limiting Toxins with Plastic Free Food Storage , and I have several blogs that talk about cleansing/detoxing. Today, however, I’ll be discussing a silent toxin, radiation, and how you can incorporate some radiation detox practices into your life.
It should come as no surprise that I receive a lot of questions from expecting mamas and moms with young children wondering what they can do about radiation exposure and how they can limit the consequences of the exposures for their families.
I can personally remember taking my 18-month old son to the airport for the first time and feeling nervous about the radiation exposure to his little body. While we can’t control all of the things, we can certainly consume healing and protective foods and herbs as well as take some other precautions to help to reduce the side effects of radiation.
What is Radiation?
For many, what comes to mind when the word radiation is mentioned is a specific medical treatment. Others may think of exposures via medical scans or electronics. Simply put, radiation is energy given off by matter in the form of rays or high-speed particles. It is, in fact, used as a medical treatment as well as for medical scans (X-ray, CT scans, and MRIs—although MRIs contain a different type of radiation).
Other man-made sources of EMFs (electromagnetic fields) include cell phones, computers, WiFi routers, radios, and TVs, as well as other electrical appliances. Airports and airplanes contain an increased amount of radiation, and, as often discussed as a hot topic in recent years, radiation can also come from big sources such as nearby cell phone towers and their corresponding frequencies. Nuclear disasters can also result in a dangerous amount of radiation exposure. Additionally, radiation exposure can be passed down through generations.
Why is Radiation a Concern?
Radiation exposure is troublesome for several reasons. To start, it speeds up the aging process (and let’s be honest, who wants that?). Anthony William explains quite well what we see and the impact radiation has on our bodies:
No one wants to age quickly—to get gray hair faster or wrinkled skin or degenerative bone diseases. No one wants to shrink and lose their height. No one wants their fingernails and toenails to lose their vitality and color. No one wants their teeth to discolor and decay or their eyes to glaze over with cataracts or degenerative retina disease to develop. We simply don’t want to age; we’re always talking about anti-aging and never talking about the radiation exposure that contributes to it. Radiation speeds up the aging process rapidly. It causes much faster deterioration of cell tissue; vitality gets sucked out of every cell exposed to radiation.
Equally important, radiation lowers the immune system. This, of course, leaves our bodies especially weakened when we come across life’s usual pathogens, viruses, bacteria, etc. This is also why it’s imperative that we support our immune systems on a regular basis. Research is also ongoing to determine the impact radiation has on childhood development, cell growth, brain function, fertility, and more.
Must Everyone Worry About Radiation Exposure?
Simply put, the answer is yes, more so for children and mamas-to-be, but this is surely a topic that should be on everyone’s radar. Certainly, those who have increased exposure to airports and those individuals working around or receiving frequent medical procedures/scans should be particularly careful about limiting exposure as much as possible.
It may be important to note that as with other toxins, some people are more sensitive to radiation than others. Individuals with more sensitive nervous systems can find themselves having reactions when using their cell phones/laptops, etc. whereas others may not detect the radiation as easily or at all (although this doesn’t mean it’s not harmful).
What Can You Do About Radiation?
Now, that I’ve covered what radiation is and how it affects the body, let’s look at some radiation detox habits you can add to your life.
Try a Cleanse

Do Your Research
When it comes to medical procedures, do some research and make the best decisions you can. For example, it is best to limit X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. However, when deemed medically necessary, you do what you can! Definitely avoid X-rays while pregnant and otherwise, ask for the lead apron for protection of other body parts.
When a mammogram is recommended, consider alternatives such as thermography or an ultrasound. These options are not always possible, but worth considering and discussing with your practitioner!
Be an Informed Traveler
As Anthony William explains on his blog , those who travel by plane often should consider replacing their luggage frequently.
It is also best to avoid airport scanners and request a manual “pat down” instead. Further, once home, be sure to store your luggage away from yourself and loved ones, especially pregnant bellies and children!

In Conclusion
