Mold Exposure: What You Need to Know & How to Protect Your Home and Health

Mold exposure is often an overlooked health issue, yet it can have profound effects on our well-being. While mainstream health conversations tend to focus on respiratory symptoms, Medical Medium has shared deeper insights into how mold exposure affects the body, particularly the immune system, nervous system, and liver. In this article, we’ll explore the dangers of mold, its connection to chronic illness, and how to effectively remove it from your home while supporting your body through exposure.

Why Mold Is a Concern?

Mold is a type of fungus that thrives in damp environments. It releases microscopic spores into the air, which can be inhaled or come into contact with the skin. Common places mold grows include bathrooms, basements, air conditioning units, and any area exposed to water damage. Inside the home, you can notice black or green mold.

Exposure to mold can lead to a range of symptoms, including:

  • Fatigue and brain fog
  • Sinus congestion and respiratory issues
  • Dizziness and headaches
  • Skin irritation
  • Digestive problems
  • Heightened sensitivity to other toxins
  • Worsening of current or existing symptoms

Another important factor to consider is the type of mold a person is exposed to and the duration of exposure. Mold toxins vary greatly, with some being more aggressive than others. While certain molds may have little impact on the body, others can be highly toxic—particularly for individuals with existing health conditions or compromised immune systems.

While some people may only experience mild symptoms, others—especially those with preexisting health conditions or weakened immune systems—may develop chronic issues from prolonged exposure.

According to Medical Medium, mold is not necessarily the root cause of chronic symptoms, but it can weaken the body and create a burden that allows underlying pathogens to thrive. He explains that toxic mold exposure places an additional strain on the liver, which is responsible for filtering out toxins and pathogens. When the liver becomes overwhelmed, symptoms such as fatigue, inflammation, and neurological issues can start to appear.

Medical Medium also highlights that mold exposure can worsen conditions related to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), chronic fatigue, Lyme disease, and neurological symptoms, as it adds to the toxic load the body is already dealing with. He emphasizes the importance of cleansing the body gently and consistently, rather than aggressively “detoxing”, which can further burden the system.

How to Remove Mold From Your Home

If you suspect mold in your home, here’s what you need to know about remediation:

1. Identifying Mold

  • Musty smells, water stains, and visible patches of mold are key indicators.
  • Seeing fungi growing on the ledge of a windowsill can be another clue that your home is damp
  • Mold can hide in walls, HVAC systems, under sinks, and in humid areas like bathrooms.
  • If you experience persistent symptoms that improve when leaving your home, mold could be a hidden culprit.

2. When to Call in Professionals

If the mold is widespread, inside walls, or affecting your health significantly, hiring a certified mold inspector or remediation specialist is the safest option. These professionals can conduct air quality tests, locate hidden mold, and ensure a thorough cleanup. Please keep in mind that there are differences in professional protocols and that I prefer some remediation practices over others.

If you have an active mold problem at your home, or suspect that you do, I cover my preferences and specifics when it comes to handling mold inside The Prepared Home.

“When our immune cells see mold spores enter our bloodstream, they quickly try to gobble up as many mold spores as possible to protect us from the neurotoxin that mold is made up of – so they don’t enter the brain. Mold rarely enters the brain because our body’s immune system uses every last immune cell to stop it from happening.” – Anthony William (Medical Medium)

Supporting the Body Through Mold Exposure

Medical Medium shares that certain foods and nutrients can assist the body in clearing mold toxins:

  • Red apples – Help bind to mold toxins, support the liver, and feed beneficial gut bacteria.
  • Celery juice – A powerful tool that supports the liver in eliminating toxins and flushing the system.
  • Wild blueberries – Protect the brain and nervous system from mold-related damage.
  • Spirulina & barley grass juice powder – Assist in pulling heavy metals and toxins from the body.
  • Garlic & onions – Contain sulfur compounds that help cleanse the body from mold toxins.

Brining in spinach, arugula, cilantro, winter squash, potatoes, oranges, and the mold exposure brain shot are also all helpful.

These foods contain a combination of glucose, trace minerals, and phytochemical healing compounds that include anti-fungal, anti-viral, and antibacterial compounds necessary to keep us strong.

Additionally, prioritizing fresh air, infrared saunas, lemon water, and deep hydration can help the body recover from exposure.

Mold exposure can be a serious issue that can impact long-term health if not addressed. And please keep in mind that if you cannot move immediately and relocate and do have some minor level of exposure, it is always helpful to still take steps to support your body by including some of the above outlined steps. The key is to take a comprehensive approach—removing mold from the home while also strengthening the body’s supports and cleansing pathways.
