Mammograms, Ultrasound, and Other Preventive Screenings for Women’s Health

Jul 13, 2024
Breast exams are important for early prevention.

We often receive questions about preventive screenings for breast health. These are crucial topics for women of all ages, and understanding them can make a significant difference in early detection and overall well-being. We want to have these tough conversations that can feel uncomfortable for some women, although the more awareness and understanding of options, the better the patient outcome.

How Do Mammograms Work? (From a Western Medical Perspective)

Mammograms are specialized X-ray exams designed to detect breast cancer early, often before any symptoms appear. The process involves compressing the breast between two plates to spread the tissue for clear images. This can detect tumors too small to be felt and identify microcalcifications that could indicate cancer. It’s important to note that mammograms involve exposure to specific radiation levels.

Mammograms are essential for early cancer prevention.

Current Information on Mammograms: Medical vs. Holistic Perspectives

From a medical standpoint, mammograms are considered the gold standard for breast cancer screening. Organizations like the American Cancer Society recommend women start annual screenings at age 45, with the option to start at 40.

While the holistic community recognizes the value of screening and having checks when you feel something is off, it often emphasizes a more personalized approach and is mindful of radiation when unnecessary. They advocate for considering individual risk factors and overall health and sometimes suggest thermography as a complementary tool. Now, there’s other technology as well.

Other Screening Options

Often, another marker is tested for BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Even around this topic, there seems to be much confusion as women can still receive a breast cancer diagnosis with the absence of these genes, so it does not necessarily paint the whole picture.

Introducing Thermography,  Prenuvo Scan, UltraSound

Thermography is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses infrared technology to detect heat patterns and blood flow in body tissues. It is particularly popular for breast health monitoring as it can reveal abnormalities that might suggest the presence of cancer or other issues. Unlike mammograms, thermography does not involve radiation, making it a safer option for some women. It is often used as a complementary tool alongside traditional methods, providing additional insight into breast health.

Prenuvo, a relatively newer technology, offers comprehensive whole-body MRI scans that detect early signs of various diseases, including cancer. These scans provide detailed images of internal organs and tissues without radiation. Prenuvo scans can benefit individuals looking for a thorough health assessment, as they can simultaneously detect potential issues in multiple body areas. The precision and depth of Prenuvo scans make them a valuable tool for those seeking an in-depth look at their overall health and potential risks.

Ultrasounds and mammograms are essential for women's health.

Ultrasound or HerScan

The power of an ultrasound can increase the detection of breast cancer from approximately 48% to 97%, particularly in women with dense breasts (Dr. Nancy Cappello, Berg Study). Ultrasound screenings can detect cancers not found by mammography and physical exams alone. Herscan provides fast, Affordable, and Convenient access to important ultrasound technology without a script from your doctor.

Why People Like These Pre-Screening Tools

Many people appreciate thermography, Prenuvo scans, and ultrasounds for their non-invasive nature and the absence of radiation exposure. Thermography is favored for its ability to provide early warnings of potential issues through changes in heat patterns, which can indicate inflammation or abnormal cell growth. Prenuvo scans are valued for their comprehensive approach, offering peace of mind through a detailed examination of the entire body. These tools are seen as proactive measures in health monitoring, allowing for early detection and timely intervention. They are additionally using thermography, ultrasound, and Prenuvo in tandem with mammograms (if and when necessary) to reduce the overall radiation exposure while ensuring thorough monitoring.

Testing Hormonal Levels and the Hormone-Cancer Connection – Why Is This Important?

Hormone levels can influence the risk of certain cancers. Extremely high estrogen, for example, is linked to breast cancer in certain circumstances. This is why understanding hormones, hormone levels, and how to monitor and balance hormones becomes even more critical. Inside Empowered Women, this round, we will discuss hormonal health in depth and more on preventive screenings.
