Childhood Conditions/ “Labels” and Toxins

Before my own healing journey began, I helped many children with a variety of “diagnoses,” “labels,” and “tags” using my education and experience as a Speech/Language Pathologist (check out this blog on the truth about food allergies for a little bit of that background). I got to see firsthand that speech therapy and other related services such as occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy (PT) can be necessary and vital means to improve the functioning of children, particularly during the critical window when Early Intervention services are introduced.

As I continued my work with children while healing my own body, what I was learning continued to reinforce to me that our bodies are SO resilient! I realized that FOOD as MEDICINE has many positive health effects and yet is insanely underutilized in today’s world. Once I was armed with this information, however, it gave me hope not only for myself and my future children, but for the children I would continue to service as a clinician and practitioner. Our bodies are RESILIENT, and I’ll say it one more time and louder for the people in the back… there is HOPE!

All around us, labels such as ADHD, concentration or focus issues, autism, delayed language, language disorders, developmental delays, childhood anxiety, depression, OCD, PANDAS, stuttering, sensory disorders (and so many others) are given to children more and more and younger and younger. Once these labels are presented, parents are often relieved to receive a diagnosis to “explain” why their child experiences specific symptoms or acts any kind of way, but these parents are likewise often left feeling like their child now has a “life sentence” because of that disorder/condition.

I am here to tell you that there is WAY more to these pictures than just a lifelong diagnosis! Research continues to support that we are exposed to a myriad of toxins in our environments, even in utero. When our bodies can’t process the toxins, it has a HUGE impact on our bodies and our brains.

Never before in our history have we been exposed to so many poisonous substances. These include the heavy metals mercury, aluminum, copper, lead, nickel, and cadmium; air pollution; pharmaceuticals; nanotechnology chemicals sprayed on almost everything manufactured; pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides; plastics; industrial cleaners; petroleum; dioxins in our oceans; and thousands of new chemicals introduced into our environment every year.

Toxins pose multiple threats. They directly poison your body, damaging your brain, your liver, your central nervous system, and other vital areas. They weaken your immune system, leaving you vulnerable to illness. And worst of all, they attract and feed cancers, viruses, bacteria, and other invaders that can instigate a serious health condition.

While toxins of every kind are harmful, heavy metals pose a unique threat. Not only are they damaging in their own right, they are also a form of neurotoxin (a poison that disrupts nerve function and confuses your immune system). Heavy metal neurotoxins can inflame and irritate our central nervous system (especially our brain), causing multiple symptoms such as memory loss, brain fog, fatigue, and depression. Toxic heavy metals can also promote inflammation in the digestive tract, releasing poisons into our gut as well. As if this isn’t bad enough, heavy metals also serve as a source of food for viruses, bacteria, parasites, and other pathogens in our body.

So what can we do??

All of that information can sound rather daunting, but at times like this, we must take what we know and use it to our advantage! We must look to support our children’s bodies by adding in great healing foods and, at the same time, begin to reduce the toxic effects on their bodies with the detoxification process!

It is important to remember that even though we are being bombarded with environmental toxins wherever we live and wherever we go, our bodies are incredibly resilient. Even if you only lower the level of heavy metals in your body by a small margin, or slightly decrease your viral load, it is likely your body will noticeably reward you for your efforts.

Trust that if you are giving your body what it needs, it will be able to better adapt to toxic fallout, pollution in the air, toxic heavy metals we’ve inherited and taken in during our lifetime, and the viral explosion that’s currently impacting the world. Even with all these challenges to our health, our bodies are resilient and can bounce back regardless of where you live and what environmental toxins you may be up against.

Detoxify Heavy Metals from the Body

The bottom line is that we need to address the heavy metal toxicity as well as improve our children’s bodies’ abilities to process and detoxify the toxins to which they are exposed. Adding the following foods and supplements to your childrens’ daily diets will go a long way toward heavy metal detoxification, improving the function of the liver and lymphatic system, and getting their brains and bodies on track:

1. Wild blueberries

These powerhouses help restore the central nervous system and flush EBV neurotoxins out of the liver. ( Epstein Barr Virus – Anthony shares that this virus is responsible for a massive amount of issues.)

The wild blueberries also draw heavy metals out of brain tissue, healing and repairing any gaps created by oxidation when the toxic substances are removed. The potent antioxidants in wild blues help reverse any oxidative damage left behind by heavy metal removal.

Once wild blueberries are introduced and are a regular part of your child’s diet, consider helping your child work his/her way up to having the Heavy Metal Detox Smoothie (HMDS).

2. Celery juice

Celery juice’s special blend of healing benefits work together to clean neurotransmitters that are dirty from viruses, toxins, and heavy metals.

Celery juice also helps clean up the liver and kills off pathogens.

Celery juice’s healing properties help in detoxifying heavy metals from the brain and neutralizes their destructive charge.
It also helps stop the oxidation of toxic metals, which prevents them from further interfering with brain function.

Celery juice works to improve low hydrochloric acid in the gut. We know that neurotransmitters for the brain are made in the gut and that heavy metals and viruses deplete hydrochloric acid so celery juice is a powerful beginning step!

3. Baseline supplements

Liquid zinc sulfate – At the core of so many of the health problems children experience is a zinc deficiency that starts early on.

B-12 – An ideal B-12 supplement includes both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin. This B-12 blend can help with neurological disorders and diseases, anxiety and panic, and the immune system.

EPA/DHA (eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid). Rather than taking a fish oil supplement, opt for a quality plant-based Omega-3 supplement to support your brain, nervous system, and whole body.

Hawaiian spirulina and barley grass juice extract powder are helpful for removing the body of heavy metals in our children’s systems. (These are 2 ingredients included in the HMDS described above.)

Also consider lemon balm and “anti-viral” herbs depending on the “root cause” of each specific case and the child’s age/weight and tolerance for supplements.

4. Crowd out the “no” foods by bringing in abundance of healing foods

When it comes to our diets, Anthony William shares what foods are best avoided in his books , and while it may not be easy to simply remove foods that your child is accustomed to eating, you can start by adding as many healing foods as you can until they naturally crowd out the “no” foods. Provide fresh fruits, greens, and vegetables as often as you can. The goal is for your children to be nourished and satisfied as they gain all of the healing benefits from their food!

Plain and simple, this means MORE FRUIT!! If you ask most parents if their kids eat fruit, the majority will immediately say ‘yes.’ The problem is that a half of an apple cut up in a lunchbox or a banana with breakfast a few days a week is just not enough. Kids need fruit in ABUNDANCE all day long—smoothies, melons, etc. (For reference, my kids who are 2 and 4 years old, start with sharing an entire melon every day, and they eat a variety of fruits and greens and veggies all day long. As a result, they are happy, satisfied, and constantly and naturally “fighting” against the toxin-heavy world we live in!)

Healing from Commonly-Diagnosed Neurological Conditions is Possible

There is no doubt that living with commonly-diagnosed neurological conditions is challenging and oftentimes heartbreaking for the children (as well as the families of the children) when handed the diagnosis. Ultimately, no one wants to see a child suffer with any “condition”—whether the impact is great or small. Thankfully, by improving the functioning of children’s nervous systems, liver, digestion, and lymphatic systems, as well as addressing nutritional deficiencies (please never underestimate the power of REAL food), and limiting heavy metal exposure we have repeatedly seen symptoms related to the above list of conditions be greatly improved or even eliminated. It might not happen overnight, but it CAN happen!
