You Prepare Your Body for Birth. But Have You Prepared Your Brain?
I saw it before I lived it.
Before my fourth baby was born, I had already experienced birth three times.
I had professional knowledge.
I understood physiology.
I had spent years learning about the body, nervous system, pregnancy, birth, nutrition, and holistic wellness.
But this time, I prepared differently.
I didn’t only think about what I wanted to happen during birth.
I became incredibly intentional about how I wanted to think, feel, respond, surrender, and remember it.
I envisioned the environment.
I imagined my body moving instinctively.
I rehearsed my breathing.
I pictured myself softening instead of resisting.
I imagined meeting each wave rather than fearing the next one.
I practiced returning to my breath and my body.
I heard the words I wanted my brain to reach for.
And I practiced it again.
And again.
And again.
Not because birth can be controlled.
It can’t.
Birth requires surrender.
But surrender and preparation are not opposites.
I believe they can be extraordinarily powerful together.
At 43, I went on to experience the birth of my fourth baby in a way that changed me forever.
And afterward, I couldn’t stop thinking:
Why aren’t we teaching mothers to prepare this part of themselves for birth?
That question became Visualize My Birth™.

We Prepare Almost Everything Except the Brain
Think about how much preparation surrounds pregnancy.
We learn about nutrition.
We prepare the nursery.
We choose providers.
We research birth locations.
We take childbirth classes.
We learn positions.
We pack bags.
We make plans.
All of those things can matter.
But there is another piece of preparation that deserves attention:
What has your brain practiced doing when intensity arrives?
This is where Visualize My Birth™ begins.
Not with trying to predict exactly how your birth will unfold.
Not with promising a particular outcome.
And not with pretending positive thinking overrides physiology or circumstance.
Instead, we intentionally practice the internal responses we want to have available to us.

Your Brain Learns Through Repetition
Mental rehearsal has been studied in fields ranging from athletics and performance to rehabilitation and skill acquisition.
There is a reason elite performers mentally rehearse before the moment arrives.
The brain learns through experience—but it can also engage many of the neural processes associated with an experience when we vividly imagine and mentally practice it.
Repeated practice matters.
Attention matters.
Emotion matters.
Sensory detail matters.
The more familiar a response becomes, the less foreign it may feel when you need to access it.
Birth is not an athletic event or a performance, and I never want mothers approaching it as something they need to “win.”
But the neuroscience of rehearsal raises a beautiful question:
If we know the brain can practice responses before an experience occurs, why wouldn’t we use that knowledge as part of birth preparation?
This Is Not Meditation. And It Is Not Hypnosis.
Visualize My Birth™ is built around Guided Mental Rehearsal™.
That distinction matters.
This is not simply closing your eyes and trying to relax.
It isn’t generic birth affirmations.
And it isn’t about convincing yourself that everything will happen exactly as you pictured it.
You are practicing.
You are creating familiarity between your brain, your body, your environment, your senses, and the responses you want available during your birthing time.
You begin with your Birth Vision.
This is your complete vision for how you want to think, feel, respond, and remember your birth experience.
Maybe you envision feeling private.
Supported.
Free to move.
Deeply connected to your baby.
Safe enough to surrender.
Then we turn that vision into something your brain can actually rehearse.
From Birth Vision to Rehearsal Script
Your Rehearsal Script is the written, sensory version of your Birth Vision.
Instead of:
I want to stay calm.
You begin creating an experience.
The room is dim.
A wave rises.
You soften your jaw.
Your shoulders release.
You breathe.
You sway.
You stay connected to your baby.
You allow the wave to move through you.
You aren’t simply telling yourself how you hope to respond.
You are mentally rehearsing the response.
Sight.
Sound.
Movement.
Touch.
Breath.
Emotion.
Environment.
The more sensory the rehearsal becomes, the more vivid the practice can become.

Then You Hear Something Especially Powerful: Your Own Voice
One of the pieces of Visualize My Birth™ that means the most to me is Voice Rehearsal.
You record your own Rehearsal Script and Anchor Statements™.
Your words.
Your intentions.
Your voice.
You aren’t depending entirely on someone else’s language to tell you what birth should feel like.
You have intentionally decided what you want to return to.
Your Anchor Statements™ become short, purposeful statements that reinforce identity, trust, calm, surrender, and connection.
And through repetition, they become familiar.
This isn’t about forcing yourself to believe something that doesn’t feel true.
It is about intentionally strengthening the thoughts and responses you want your mind to recognize.
But What If Birth Doesn’t Go According to the Vision?
This may be the most important part.
Visualize My Birth™ is not about scripting an outcome.
A Birth Vision is not a prediction.
And mental rehearsal is not control.
You can prepare deeply and still encounter something you did not anticipate.
That is why surrender is woven throughout the method.
You are not only rehearsing one perfect sequence of events.
You are practicing how to return to yourself.
Return to your breath.
Return to your baby.
Return to the present wave.
Return to what you have practiced.
Even when something around you changes.
That is a very different kind of preparation.
Because the goal isn’t:
Everything must happen exactly this way.
The goal is:
Whatever unfolds, I have practiced coming back to myself.
Train Intentionally. Surrender Instinctively.
That became one of the foundational ideas behind Visualize My Birth™.
Train intentionally. Surrender instinctively.
Preparation does not have to mean control.
Education does not have to mean fear.
And surrender does not have to mean entering birth without tools.
We can understand physiology while respecting its mystery.
We can prepare the brain while trusting the body.
We can create a vision while remaining open to the experience.
We can practice intentionally—and then allow instinct to lead.

Visualize My Birth™ Is Becoming an Entire Education Ecosystem
What began as something deeply personal has grown far beyond what I originally imagined.
Visualize My Birth™ is the signature method, bringing Guided Mental Rehearsal™, Voice Rehearsal, Birth Vision work, Anchor Statements™, and intentional birth preparation directly to mothers.
For women who want comprehensive pregnancy and natural birth education alongside the method, I created Visualize My Birth Complete™.
And because changing birth preparation also means educating the professionals standing beside mothers, the DKS Visualize My Birth™ wellness Support Specialist pathway brings this work into the professional side of the DKS Institute.
These pieces have one shared purpose:
To change the way we prepare for birth.
Not by giving mothers another hundred things to fear.
By helping them understand their physiology, prepare intentionally, build trust, and practice the internal tools they want available when their birthing time arrives.
Your Birth Begins Before the First Wave
There is preparation you can see.
The appointments.
The nursery.
The classes.
The birth plan.
And then there is preparation no one else can see.
The moment you close your eyes and rehearse softening your jaw.
The breath you have practiced hundreds of times.
The words your brain recognizes because it has heard them in your own voice again and again.
The vision you have visited so many times that pieces of it feel familiar.
And eventually, the moment comes when you stop practicing.
You surrender.
You meet your baby.
See it before you live it.
Train intentionally. Surrender instinctively.
