What Every Mom Should Know About Dyslexia, Speech Delays & the Deeper Root Causes

A guide to uncovering underlying factors and empowering your child’s learning journey
As a mom and holistic health practitioner, I often speak with parents who are concerned about their child’s speech, reading ability, or struggles in school, and they’re not sure where to start. One of the most common questions I hear is:
“Could this be dyslexia?”
It’s a valid question, and one that deserves more than a quick screening or label. Because while dyslexia is often described as a learning disorder that makes reading difficult, what many families don’t realize is that it can also impact speech and language development.
And just as importantly, there may be deeper root causes that are almost never addressed in conventional care.
The SLP’s Role in Dyslexia
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) play a crucial role when it comes to identifying signs of dyslexia.
Why? Because dyslexia isn’t just about reading.
“Dyslexia, a language-based learning disability, can impact speech by affecting phonological processing, which is the ability to manipulate and understand sounds in language. This can lead to difficulties with phonological awareness, memory, and word retrieval, potentially causing delays in speech and language development.” (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], www.asha.org)
If your child has trouble remembering words, blends sounds awkwardly, or struggles with expressive language even before reading comes into play, these could all be early signs. And a skilled SLP is often one of the first professionals to notice and assess these challenges.
Signs of Dyslexia & Speech Delays
- Late speech development or difficulty forming words
- Struggles with rhyming or remembering lyrics
- Difficulty following multi-step directions
- Trouble identifying letter sounds or blending phonics
- Poor spelling or avoiding reading
- Swapping words or syllables when speaking
- A family history of reading or language struggles
If you’re seeing these signs, trust your instincts and seek support early—but remember, a diagnosis is just the beginning.
What Medical Medium® Says About Dyslexia
As someone who’s been a trusted referral for Anthony William, Medical Medium®, I always look to the root causes he shares when working with families because they’ve changed lives.
In his blog “Dyslexia,” Anthony shares:
“The true cause of dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by toxic heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum, and copper oxidizing and short-circuiting neurotransmitter function.”
These metals can lodge deep in the brain and interfere with language centers, memory recall, auditory processing, and more. He explains that dyslexia is not just a static learning issue—it’s the result of interference in the brain’s ability to interpret signals properly.
“It’s not that the child doesn’t want to learn, can’t learn, or isn’t intelligent. It’s that these disruptive toxic exposures can cause misfiring and miscommunication between neurons in the brain.”
This insight reframes the whole conversation and highlights why moms need to look beyond labels.
It’s Not About Intelligence—It’s About Interference
Children with dyslexia are often misunderstood. Before receiving a diagnosis, they may be labeled as “behind,” “unmotivated,” or “lazy”—none of which is true.
What if instead of assuming the problem is within the child, we looked at what’s affecting the child? According to Anthony William, dyslexia and related delays can be caused or worsened by:
- Toxic heavy metals like mercury and aluminum
- A viral load (such as Epstein-Barr Virus) that inflames the brain
- Neurotoxins from pathogens
- Nutrient deficiencies caused by chronic inflammation or poor absorption
Inside Kids Thrive, we explore how these underlying root causes—especially metals and viral activity—can show up as speech delays, sensory issues, learning challenges, or behavioral changes.
Supporting the Brain from the Inside Out
If you suspect your child is dealing with dyslexia—or they already have a diagnosis—here are things you can begin doing right now:
- Reduce the toxic load
Avoid processed foods, artificial dyes, aluminum-containing products, and other known sources of metals. - Bring in supportive nutrients
Wild blueberries, leafy greens, and cilantro help bind and flush metals; bananas, potatoes, and avocados supply critical glucose. - Support the nervous system
Calming routines, consistent rhythms, and safe spaces help the brain regulate and integrate new skills. - Work with a practitioner who gets the full picture
Look for an SLP who listens, honors your voice, and integrates whole-child care.
Inside Kids Thrive, We Go Deeper Than Labels
The truth is, many children with dyslexia or other learning challenges aren’t getting full support. They’re given accommodations but not always answers. They’re offered therapy but not always true understanding. And moms are left wondering if there’s more they could be doing.
That’s why I created Kids Thrive. Inside this 6-week course, we look at the deeper causes behind delays, sensitivities, and learning struggles—and what you can do at home to support your child’s development in real, practical ways.
Whether your child is dealing with dyslexia, speech delays, chronic congestion, behavioral shifts, or immune challenges, we cover nutrition, nervous system support, food swaps, routines, baths, homeopathy, supplements, and more.
Most importantly, you’ll walk away feeling clear, equipped, and empowered.
If your child is struggling with dyslexia—or if you simply want to understand how to support their development more holistically—join me inside Kids Thrive.
Let’s move beyond the labels and get to the heart of what our kids need.
With love and belief in you,
